Somewhere around my senior year of high school some dark and crazy stuff went down in the world of dietary fiber. Oat bran, long the standard bearer of the complex carbohydrates, came under attack for being overrated. The public had been hoodwinked, bamboozled even, into believing that oat bran helped to lower cholesterol, and a new study threatened to expose it for the uber-hyped source of fiber that it was.
